Las Vegas is known worldwide as “Sin City“, a gambling mecca in the United States. For years, players have traveled to the city to enjoy quality casino gaming, entertainment, dining, drinks, and overnight stays.
Within the past few years, crime has seemingly amped up, leaving guests a bit skittish to travel to the area. During the recent G2E conference in Las Vegas, several casino executives took part in a panel to discuss the safety and security measures of properties.
Safety Remains a Priority
Among those speaking during the conference panel, there was a common consensus; Las Vegas is safe, and casinos are focused on security measures. CEO of Wynn Resorts, Craig Billings, stated that safety is a societal issue and the Las Vegas Strip is one of the safer US locations.
Billings pointed out that the Strip has a large security presence as well as the Metro Police force patrolling (pictured) and surveillance cameras. These elements combine to create a safe place for travelers to come and enjoy.
Casino owner Derek Stevens was also part of the panel and spoke about safety being a top priority of casino operators. Stevens gave praise to the local police department for helping casinos to create a safe environment for guests.
Continued Crime and Craziness
While casino executives say Las Vegas is safe, crime does occur. Just last week a mass stabbing took place eight people were assaulted on the north end of the Strip. In another incident, two people died after a man attacked them. The suspect, Yoni Barrios, was trying to get a picture with several showgirls when he started to attack those around him.
Barrios was arrested by police and faces two counts of open murder as well as six counts of attempted murder. The violent incident was scary and took place in broad daylight, which makes it even worse. It seems incidents of violent crime are occurring on a regular basis and despite security measures, visitors need to be aware of their surroundings.
Security enhancements have been made in several areas of Sin City to help with crime, including the Fremont Street Experience. The downtown pedestrian mall has added metal detector screenings on the weekends and bag checks. Anyone under 21 is subject to a curfew.
Hopefully such measures will help to thwart criminals or at least catch individuals quickly before any criminal act can escalate to serious harm or death of another individual.
