Gaming officials in Massachusetts have revealed the gaming totals for the MGM Springfield after the three quarter performance, showing the venue has earned $191 million thus far this year. Revenues stem from slot machines and table games, with the casino already on path to earn more in 2022 than in 2021.
Details of the Quarterly Earnings
In the revenue report it showed, last year the casino generated around $181 million in the quarter, which is about $10 million less than the amount this year. The first quarter of 2022 earned the casino over $62 million while the second quarter generated even more at $64.8 million. In the third quarter, the casino earned $64 million.
Augustine Kim, the MGM Springfield Vice President, stated that the casino is ahead of the game when comparing 2022 to 2021. It took time to get back on track after COVID but now progress has been made. The hope and expectation is that the casino will continue to grow in the fourth quarter and into next year.
During peak hours, the casino offers 36 table games with an average of four players per table. Gross gaming earnings from the tables have met or exceeded pre-COVID earnings thus far. Over the summer, the Commission pushed the casino to open more table games and hire more live dealers. MGM Springfield is now able to accommodate the table game demand it has seen on a daily basis.
Dealing with Minors on the Gaming Floor
Also in its quarterly report, MGM Springfield provided details on the subject of minors. In the second and third quarter, the casino had to deal with 181 reports of minors on the gaming floor. The number may seem large, but is quite low compared to the more than 1,000 instances in the same time frame back in 2019.
The main issue for the casino is that the gaming floor is an open area. There are several entry points, and it can be difficult to check the ID of every patron. The casino wanted to have a family friendly feel, so it created the open floor plan, but that has ended up causing issues with minors.
The Massachusetts casino is currently working with the Investigations and Enforcement Bureau to figure out how to stop minors from entering the gaming floor. There is no plan in place just yet. It will be interesting to see what the venue comes up with. So far, ideas such as adding guard rails or closing off the gaming floor have been nixed.
