Illegal gambling establishments are an issue in several states across the US, especially in areas where gambling is not heavily offered or illegal in general.
In Michigan, players have access to online and land-based gambling, with options from commercial entities and tribal operators. There is no need for illegal gambling, but the issue is still present. Just this week, an illegal gambling facility was shut down with authorities seizing cash and machines during a raid.
Shutting Down the Illegal Operation
After receiving anonymous tips regarding an illegal gambling operation in Lansing, authorities got to work investigating the matter. Eventually, a raid was planned by state investigators, and it took place this week.
The Cozy Barcade on South Waverly Road was the subject of the raid, with several reports indicating that illegal gambling was taking place on the premises. After it was all said and done, the police left the scene with over $23,000 in cash and three dozen gaming machines.
The state Department of Attorney General and Michigan Gaming Control Board investigated the matter and used support from the Eaton County Sheriff’s Office and local police department for the raid. Police reported that several complaints were posted by residents about the facility. The establishments can lead to other type of criminal activity in the area, such as drugs, assaults, and robberies due to the lack of regulation.
Stopping Illegal Gambling Locations
Police seized several gambling machines during the raid, including computers used for slot gaming. The property also has freestanding slot-type machines and table mounted games. A coin pusher machine was also located on site.
The Michigan Gaming Control Board takes illegal gambling very seriously and investigates when tips come in regarding such facilities as the Cozy Barcade. Henry Williams, the executive director of the board, pointed out that illegal gaming locations will prey on vulnerable people. Patrons who visit such establishments are not protected since the gaming options are not legal and regulated.
The board vows to continue to work hard to protect the public and appreciates the help from the local community when illegal venues pop up. The public plays a vital role in stopping illegal gambling sports in the state. Without the tips that come in, the Board and police would have no idea that such venues even exist.
We should see more information on the bust provided in the coming days. It seems unlikely that the facility owner will be able to fight the claims since police found so much cash and the various gambling games on-site.
