Summary
- Earnings dropped over $13m from December and $39.3m from November.
- Revenues were higher than January 2021.
- Hollywood Casino at Penn National recorded the most earnings at $57.2m.
The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board recently provided the January revenue earnings for the 16 casinos in the state, showing $393.1 million generated for the month. The amount is high, but far less than what was earned in December and November. Are the casino’s losing ground or were the last two months of 2021 just record-setting anomalies?
January Earnings
The January earnings were $13.1 million less than December 2021 and a whopping $39 million+ lower than November’s total. From the amount generated in January, the state received $157.5 million in tax payments.
Even though the decrease was prevalent when compared to the previous two months, the January earnings were higher than the same month in 2021, at 26%. Internet gambling was also up, breaking a record set in October. January’s iGaming earnings came in at over $108 million.
The top earner in the state was the Hollywood Casino at Penn National, bringing in over $57.2 million. Rivers Casino Pittsburgh did well too, generating over $38 million in earnings. Slot machines brought the bulk of the amount, at over $28 million.
In third place was the Hollywood Casino at the Meadows, bringing in $16.7 million. Over $11 million of that amount was created from slot machines.
Slots Games are the Most Popular Among Players
Across the state, retail slot machines reigned supreme. The games brought in over $168 million for the month, easily beating out table games, as they generated $78.2 million. In the online slot gaming sector, slots are also the most popular, with over $71 million in earnings. Table games were less than half that amount at $33 million. Players do enjoy online poker in the state, with January presenting $3.3 million in revenues.
The state also offers video gambling, fantasy sports contests, and sports betting. In the VGT sector, over $3 million came in during the month of January, while the fantasy sector earned a little less at $2.8 million.
Sports betting did well in both the online and retail sector. In total, the industry generated over $32 million in earnings. This was a nice increase from December, as the month only brought in over $18 million. Total wagers placed in January were over $793 million, which is a new monthly record for the state.
Sports betting earnings were pushed by the NFL and NBA as well as the national championship in college football. Next month, betting should pick up as the college basketball March Madness tournaments begin.
