  • A total of $2 million is available in grant funds.
  • Funds can be used for prevention, enforcement, investigation, or prosecution connected to illegal gambling.
  • Applications for grants are currently being accepted by the Board.

Illegal gambling seems to be a never-ending problem in some areas of the United States. From illegal gambling rings to video gaming parlors and dog fights, there is always some form of wagering taking place.

In Pennsylvania, the Gaming Control Board is working hard to ensure that any form of unlawful gambling is stopped in its tracks.

The board has $2 million in grant money currently up for grabs via law enforcement agencies that apply for funding. The money can be used to investigate illegal gambling activity as well as deter or prosecute those involved. The application process is open now to any local agency in need of assistance.

Available Funds to Combat Illegal Gambling

In the past, the funds have been used in many ways to stop illegal gambling activity. Since 2006, law enforcement agencies have received money from the board and used it to shore up any needs such as overtime pay, rental cars, or tech like tablets. Back in 2015, funds were used to stop a dog-fighting ring in the state capital.

To receive funds, local agencies must fill out an application. The grant program guidelines and application are downloadable vis the Board’s website. Local law enforcement agencies that qualify for funding include municipal and regional police departments, District Attorneys offices, state police, sheriffs who can enforce unlawful gaming legislation, and task forces.

College and university police departments were added to the list this year to stop illegal gambling from taking place on campuses.

Serving Two Purposes with the Illegal Gaming Fight

As the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board provides grant money for the fight against illegal gambling, it serves two purposes. One, it helps to stop illegal activity, getting criminals off the streets. The criminal element connected to illegal gambling can also be connected to other issues such as drugs or gun violence.

Secondly, the funds help to protect consumers. Any form of illegal gambling may seem appealing, but it is unsafe. Players are not protected by any consumer laws, and usually, those who run the operations are connected to other criminal activity.

Legalized gaming provides a safe option for consumers, with protected funds as well as a safe gambling environment. In an illegal setting, players may not earn payouts and may get wrapped up with the criminal element that can lead to other issues.

The funds provided by the Board are a clear example as to how the gambling industry is able to give back. The money is used by local law enforcement to assist in the fight against illegal gambling, stopping criminals in their tracks and helping consumers access only safe and regulated gambling options.
