Man arrested after smashing window at Caesars Palace and keeping a woman hostageSummary

  • The standoff lasted several hours and took place in a hotel room.
  • No injuries were reported in the incident.
  • Items were thrown from the 21st floor window by the man.

Las Vegas was a buzz yesterday as police dealt with an hours-long standoff involving a man and a female hostage. The incident occurred at the Caesars Palace Casino and police were eventually able arrest the man and release the woman from the situation.

Details of the Incident

The man and woman were in a hotel room at Caesars on the 21st floor. During the standoff, items were thrown from the window of the room, which put the immediate area at risk. Items such as cushions and furniture were thrown down.

Captain Stephen Connell said that the standoff started around 9:15 am. Hotel security reported at that time that a woman and man were arguing. The man then pulled the woman into the hotel room with force.

Police arrived and the SWAT team posted outside the hotel room. It was unclear in the beginning if the man was armed or was just holding the woman against her will. Guests of the hotel then heard glass breaking as the man busted the window and started throwing items down. Guests were unsure of what was going on and many feared a shooter was in the hotel room.

People at the hotel were asked to evacuate, especially those in the way of the items being thrown. It took around 30 minutes before people were told they could go back to their rooms. Housekeeping continued to work on certain floors of the hotel at this time, which helped to put guests at ease.

Ongoing Hostage Situation

The man threw items from the hotel room for about an hour. Witnesses felt as though the room was emptied of all furniture. Thankfully, no one seemed to be hurt by the falling items. Guests were not told what was going on at the time but were asked to stay in their hotel rooms as a precaution.

The suspect was eventually taken into custody in the early afternoon hours. The female was with officers and no doubt explained what was going on. It is still unclear as to why the incident occurred. Charges are sure to be filed, but which ones remain a mystery.

Caesars Entertainment spokesperson Dayna Calkins released a statement, calling the situation ‘a security incident inside a guest room’ and it was now resolved. The Caesars Palace credited the police department and the security staff of the hotel in resolving the incident.

More details on the incident should be made public in the coming days.
