In an announcement on Wednesday, Grand Sierra Resort showcased plans to invest almost $1 billion in a 10-year expansion plan for its Reno operations.

The hotel-casino provider is set to launch the largest investment in the city’s history, bringing the University of Nevada’s basketball team a new home venue by 2026 and many other changes.

Details of the Expansion Plans

So, what does Nevada casino have in store? The gaming brand has plans to spend a ton of cash to expand its operations in Reno. The new sports arena will offer 10,000 seats and be the home of the Nevada team. The arena can also be used for special events or concerts.

The plans also include a new hotel with 800 guest rooms and residential units with riverfront views. The residential housing will include at least 300 units and help to provide housing for the employees. The area lacks housing for individuals who work at casinos in Reno and Las Vegas.

Alex Mereulo, the resort owner, stated that the vision is to transform Grand Sierra Resort into a destination where community, sports, and entertainment come together. The company will use a 140-acre property to make the changes.

The University of Nevada Plans

The casino and the University of Nevada have plans to announce their new partnership by Fall 2026. The new sports arena will be 300,000 square feet and include specialty suites and hospitality clubs. Nevada President Brian Sandoval stated that the University is excited to partner with the casino as they develop a new arena and entertainment district in Northern Nevada.

Sandoval was recently named president of the University after graduating in 1986 and serving as Nevada governor for two terms. A lot has changed in college sports since the 1980s, with today’s games combined with sports betting. It’s big business, and the activity is centered around professional and college sports across the United States.

The University of Nevada’s Wolf Pack is part of the Mountain West Conference and has played games at its Lawlor Events Center since 1983. With a new venue, the team will have a better arena to play in and will likely see more fans joining them in the stands. The venue will also be a revenue driver for Reno as it can be used for other events that will bring in overnight travelers.
