- Exposure started in early April through early December.
- The casino is working with the health department to notify those who may have been exposed.
- The risk of exposure is low due to the COVID-19 protocols like masking and social distancing.
For months now, everyone in the United States and abroad have been focused on COVID-19.
No one wants to catch any variant of the virus and we are hopeful it will go away sooner rather than later. Casinos have been affected by the virus due to closures and low-capacity rates as well as having to follow guidelines including masking and social distancing. This week, it came to light that one casino in California is focused on another kind of outbreak: tuberculosis.
Sycuan Casino Affected by Tuberculosis Exposure
Yesterday, officials with the San Diego County Health and Welfare Department and the Sycuan Casino made it public that the venue is dealing with a potential exposure to tuberculosis. People from the casino have been diagnosed with the virus and others may have been affected.
The exposure date has a long range, from April 1 to December 9, 2021. Currently, the health department and employees of the casino are working together to contact those who may have been exposed to the virus.
Tuberculosis can be transmitted via the air when an individual has prolonged contact with the infected. Symptoms of the virus include a persistent cough, sweating at night, and weight loss that is unexplained. An individual that is affected by tuberculosis may not know they have it due to not showing obvious symptoms. Thankfully, the condition can be cured with long-term care.
Deputy public health officer Dr. Cameron Kaiser said that this instance is probably not a high-risk exposure but employees that may have been exposed should be tested.
COVID-19 Helps the Situation
Surprisingly, the COVID-19 pandemic may have helped to keep the infections at a low rate of spread. The casino has been following COVID-19 protocols, which includes mask wearing, social distancing, and party walls within the venue.
With these practices in place, the virus would have lower potential of spreading to employees and patrons. Hopefully, everyone visiting and working within the exposure dates followed these protocols and fewer people will be affected.
There is no information available on how the exposure started. We do not know if it was an employee working at the venue or if a patron that frequents the casino is the one affected. It is also unclear as to how many people now have tuberculosis due to exposure. We shall see in the coming weeks if more information is provided on the full details of the situation.
